The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has written to the Anglican Church in the country to reject the legislation on anti-gay, stating his disapproval of Uganda’s new law
As approved by President Yoweri Museveni in May, gay sex attracts a punishment of life imprisonment, and aggravated homosexuality, including transmitting HIV, attracts the death penalty.
Justin Welby, leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, said his letter to the Primate of Uganda, Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba was to express grief and dismay at the church’s stance.
Welby in a statement on Friday says.”there is no justification for any province of the Anglican Communion to support such laws: not in our resolutions, not in our teachings, and not in the Gospel we share,”
Following Museveni’s approval, Kaziimba had in May said he was grateful for the new law as he alleged that homosexuality which negates the country’s religious and cultural beliefs was being forced on Uganda by foreign actors who disguise themselves as human rights activists”.
There is an approximate of 45 million Anglicans in the country according to the Church in Uganda, making 36% of the entire country’s population.
