Fatai Osho likely to become Akwa United head coach
In just a little over a week, since the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season ended, the first managerial change is about to happen.
The stage seems to be set for Uyo-based side, Akwa United to appoint Fatai Osho as head coach, ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Following the inability of the Promise Keepers to qualify for the championship play-offs, otherwise called the Super Six; the management of the club is apparently not satisfied with the performances of the team, under Coach Ayodeji Ayeni, one of the youngest tacticians in the league, who joined the 2019 Federation Cup winners, after quitting Sunshine Stars of Akure.
Akwa United missed out of the Super Six, with an inferior goal difference, having finished in fourth spot in Group A of the NPFL, tied on 32 points with Enyimba of Aba, who went on to win the NPFL title, in Lagos.
While the discontentment in the team grew, without any words of assurances from the Paul Bassey-led management, of a renewal of the expiring contract, Coach Ayeni on Tuesday, opted to jump out before he was pushed.
According to his agent, Akin Maxwell, Ayeni’s next destination in a league with a very high turnover of managerial mobility, will be revealed in the next few days.
Expectedly, Osho’s chequered coaching career has seen him handle teams like Crown FC Ogbomoso, Remo Stars, Supreme Court FC Abuja, Kogi United, and Enyimba of Aba.
After leaving Enyimba by mutual consent (2020), he took up the role of Assistant Coach at Rivers United, helped them to win the NPFL title for the first time, in the 2021/22 season, and that qualified them to fly the banner of Nigeria in the CAF Champions League.
However, they failed to reach the group phase and had to regress to the Confederation Cup, where their fine run was halted by Yanga SC of Tanzania, in the quarterfinals.
The attention of the club was switched to the defense of their NPFL title, but they fell short and placed 3rd, despite putting up a good fight; but a couple of days later, Osho announced his departure from Rivers United.
