The disability community under TAF Africa, on Thursday, wrote an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, appealing for appointment of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), into his cabinet.
At a news conference in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder, TAF Africa, Mr Jake Epelle, explained that appointment of PWDs, with requisite qualifications as part of the cabinet is imperative at this point as far as they are citizens.
According to Epelle, Mr. President’s commitment to the inclusion of PWDs in his cabinet will not only transform the lives of millions of Nigeria, but will serve as an indication of his commitment to the principles of equality and social justice for all.
The letter reads in part, “TAF Africa writes you this open letter as a concerned organization that advocates for the rights and recognition of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
“We strongly urge you to prioritize the inclusion of persons with disabilities in your cabinet appointments, thereby fostering an inclusive and representative government.
“It is an unfortunate reality that persons with disabilities in our society often face significant barriers to accessing basic rights and opportunities.
“Despite the progress made in recent years, we continue to witness the marginalization and exclusion of this significant population”.
“As the leader of our great nation, you have the power to change this narrative and make a resounding statement about the values and potential of persons with disabilities”.
The letter further notes that including persons with disabilities in the cabinet, would harness their expertise and experiences.
TAF CEO disclosed that two State Governors have assured appointments for PWDs into their cabinets, urging the 36 State Governors are to follow suite in appointing PWDs into their cabinets.
Epelle assured that there will be capacity building of PWDs appointed into federal and state cabinets, “this will ensure they perform, as disability community do not want to fail, but if any of its members fail to perform they will be removed from the cabinet”.
