South Korea has switched its traditional age counting system in line with international standards.
Previously in the Korean age system a person becomes one at birth and gains a year on 1 January of every year.
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has described the traditional age-counting methods as unnecessary social and economic costs.
Lawmakers voted to scrap the traditional counting methods last December.
Meanwhile reactions have trailed the switch from the country’s traditional age counting system with a South Korean Jeongsuk Woo expressing the hope that the new changes will help break down what he described as Korea’s hierarchical culture.
The BBC quoted another citizen Hyun Jeong Byun as saying he will be two years younger with the implementation of the new age counting system.
The new age counting system takes effect from Wednesday, June 28 2023.
