Governor Babagana Zulum has announced the banning of metal scavenging in Borno state, after he had a spot assessment of discovery of large quantities of metal scraps believed to be property belonging to the government.
The Governor noted that in the last few years, thousands of people in the state were killed as a result of metal scavenging.
According to him, people go to extreme in the business with some allegedly stealing public property including streetlights, poles and tanks belonging to telecommunications companies amongst others.
He also alleged that some vehicles in the local government premises were destroyed by those interested in the scavenging business, stressing that government cannot allow the nefarious activities to continue.
The Governor then announced an immediate ban of scavenging activities in the 27 LGAs in Borno state.
Governor Zulum said the order was made to bring sanity to business activities and safeguard the lives of the scavengers themselves.
