
Former president Goodluck Jonathan has been unveiled as the African Agriculture Technology Foundation AATF Goodwill ambassador in Africa for his visionary leadership in transforming agriculture in the country.
At the ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Director of AATF Dr Canisius Kanangire said former president Jonathan had exhibited unwavering dedication to promote and transform agriculture during his Administration.
Dr Kanangire explained that former president Goodluck Jonathan was chosen as the AATF Ambassador because of his role in the development of biotechnology by assenting to the Biosafety laws during his tenure as president.
Dr Kanangire noted that AATF through collaboration with government and other foreign partners had developed innovative solutions to address agricultural challenges faced by farmers.
The Executive Director who noted that through its efforts, some crops like BT Cowpea and cotton had been released to farmers while TELA maize and other crops would soon be in the market called for continuous partnership to bridge production deficit in agriculture.
“As we witness this momentous occasion, let us remember that change is a collective endeavor. Governments, private sector partners, civil society and individuals all have roles to play in shaping Africa’s agricultural landscape. Let us be Inspired by the leadership and commitment that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan embodies, and let us join hands to create a sustainable and resilient agricultural sector that empowers farmers, feeds communities, and uplifts nations”he said.
The Minister of state Agriculture and rural development Dr Sabi Abdullahi maintained that the present administration was committed to bring about the socio-economy development of the country through agriculture.
Responding, former President Goodluck Jonathan said the rapid increase of population requires innovation and modern ways to improve production and ensure food security among African countries.
“It is through advancement in agriculture that we can ensure food security, poverty reduction and uplift the lives of our people’’.
‘’A key central person in this endeavour is the smallholder farmer -the person that feeds all who live in towns and the promise that agriculture offers to uplifting their lives. That person deserves to benefit from their sweat and investment in agriculture and that person also deserves to live a fulfilling, healthy life. Technology can offer that.”
