
The federal government is to build thirty four thousand houses nationwide under the first phase of the Renewed Hope Cities Project.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa who made this known in Abuja when the Governor of Taraba State paid him a courtesy visit said the project aims to create over two hundred and forty thousand jobs.
To bring the project to reality, the ministry had already requested about 50 hectares of land from each state of the federation for the project.
Alaji Dangiwa said the federal government needed to build over five hundred and fifty thousand houses at the cost of four point four trillion naira annually in the next ten years to address the nation’s housing deficit.
Alhaji Dangiwa maintained that the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Housing Authority were undergoing reforms to function optimally.
The minister appealed for the support of state governors and other stakeholders to review the Land Use Act of 1978 to simplify land administration.
The Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to make houses available and affordable to the people of Taraba State.
To buttress the need to address housing deficit, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu called for a collective effort of stakeholders in the housing sector to fix the challenges of housing deficit.
Similarly, The House of Representatives said it will review the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme Act of 1992 in line with the current economic realities in the country.
