
The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, says the ministry is positioned to create jobs and facilitate employment through skills acquisition centres across the country.
The skills development and certification department initiate, oversees, implement and monitors all activities of public and private skills and apprenticeship training providers.
Deputy Director, Skills Development and Certification Department, in the Ministry, Dr Tiza Shaakaa stated this on Monday at workshop organized for Labour Correspondents in Abuja.
In a paper presentation on “Strategic reportage on employment generation” mandate of the ministry on job creation/employment generation, Dr Tiza Shaakaa, explained that employment, of young people in the country could be achieved through training in basic vocational and technical skills.
He also called for training and re-training of unemployed graduates for self-reliance in trade of their choice and development of policies and guidelines for all vocational, apprenticeship and other skills training programmes.
According to Dr Shaakaa, the efforts of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other organizations involved in vocational apprenticeship/traineeship and other skills acquisition programmes would be properly coordinated.
The Director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr Emmanuel Igbinosun, said the workshop focuses on deepening the knowledge of the Labour correspondents in reporting the activities of the Ministry effectively.
’’It is my expectation that the workshop would give the Labour correspondents an increased understanding of the Ministry’s responsibility of initiating and implementing the employment and wages policies of the Federal Government’’. Igbinosun stated.
He urged the public to explore the National National Electronic Labour Exchange (NELEX), which can be accessed at nelex.gov.ng for decent employment.
Director, Employment and Wages in the Ministry, Mr Joseph Akpan urged the unemployed youths get certified training programmes in vocational and technical expertise for self-dependence.
He also spoke on the need for employment agencies and Labour contractors to obtain licences for operation and monitoring.
Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr Olajide Oshundun urged labour correspondents to project the goals and mission of the ministry to erase the misconception of the public about the ministry.
He advised Journalists to be factual and objective in their reportage concerning labour related issues.
