
Professor Isaac Olawale of the University of Ibadan says a non-violent approach of Advocacy, Dialogue and collaboration remains key in mediating conflicts.
The academic while speaking in Abuja at the Inauguration of Fellows of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, said societies must learn to adopt peaceful approach to conflicts which had proven over time to be effective.
He emphasised the need for synergy between Researchers and Parties in conflict, as different models were available for peace mediators to adopt.
Executive Director, International Peace Bureau, Sean Conner, said there were about 33 active armed conflicts globally which put an over-aching need for more peace practitioners with different skills to share resources for peace building.
A senior Peace and Development Advisor to the resident coordinator and UN system in Zimbabwe, Dr Takwa Zebulon urged the fellows to work with their various governments and ensure that partnership remained key to achieving sustainable peace.
Also speaking, the Chairman Board of Trustees of the Society, professor Sulaiman Bogoro urged security agencies to use nonviolent approach to resolve conflicts within communities.
The inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun who was among the Fellows inducted, promised a renewed commitment to the advancement of the Society.
