As part of measures to increase productivity inthe workplace, persons saddled with leadership responsibilities in the public service have been advised to create friendly atmosphere where their subordinates could freely express their thoughts and ideas.
The Secretary to the Delta State Government((SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu gave the advice yesterday when he declared open a one–day leadership training for senior management staff in his office at the conference room, SSG’s Office, Asaba.
Dr. Emu charged heads of various departments in the public service not to be too bureaucratic,but to be flexible and friendly when relating with their subordinates and the public.
The SSG, who was also a participant in the training session, said the training was necessary to help the senior management staff to effectively exercise their leadership roles so as to deliver value to the State government and Deltans.
He said there should be no place for intimidating leadership in the public service, urging all to maximize the lessons learnt from the training to select, train, be supportive to their subordinates, and better oversee their responsibilities.
Earlier, the Managing Director, Forbs Consulting Limited, facilitator of the training, Dr. Anthony Okocha, said the essence of the training was to apply personal effectiveness in leadership, build team cohesion, and develop effective communication skills that could achieve set goals in the public service.
Other facilitators from the Consulting firm, Dr. Adele Ekechukwu and Mrs. Felicia Udemezue trained the participants on leadership areas such as how to be assertive in leadership communication and how to give and receive feedback and leadership personality styles that achieve results.
In an interview with some participants, they expressed appreciation to the SSG for the timely and robust leadership workshop and assured that they would put what they have been taught to use in order to become good leaders over their subordinates.
Topics taught at the seminar include enhancing team cohesion through approvedcommunication skills; understanding self-filters and relationships; and core values as the foundation for effective leadership.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of participation to the participants.
