
The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government, Hon. Jaro Egbo has made a clarion call to Youths in the locality to say no to drug abuse, especially during this yuletide season.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday at the Council Secretariat, Hon. Egbo emphasized the importance of maintaining a drug free lifestyle to secure a brighter future for the youths and the community at large.
The Council Chairman expressed concern over the alarming rise in drug abuse and its negative impact on the lives of young people, including their physical health, mental well–being and societal contributions.
He passionately appealed to the youths to focus on academic excellence and other productive endeavours, describing Education as a cornerstone for success and achievement in life.
“The Christmas season is a time of reflection, renewal and celebration. It is also an opportunity for our youths to make meaningful resolutions that will positively shape their future. I urge all young people to prioritize Education, stay away from drugs and channel their energy towards building a prosperous tomorrow.”
Furthermore, the Council Boss called on parents and guardians to play a more active role in the upbringing and monitoring of their children.
He described parents as the first line of defence and ‘watchdogs’ who have a vital responsibility to guide their children and shield them from negative influences.
“Insecurity remains a major challenge in our society and it is often fueled by drug abuse and delinquent behaviours among our youths. As parents and guardians, we must be vigilant and committed to nurturing our children in ways that instill discipline and positive values.”
Continuing, he said, “if we work together, we can ensure that the menace of insecurity becomes a thing of the past by 2025.”
Hon. Egbo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting youth development through initiatives aimed at providing educational opportunities and creating an enabling environment for young people.to thrive.
The Council Boss beckoned on religious institutions, community Leaders and stakeholders to support this move by creating awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of Education.
The Council Chairman expressed optimism that the issue of drug abuse would be surmounted with collective effort from stakeholders involved.
He encouraged all residents of Ughelli North to celebrate the yuletide season responsibly and strive towards building a brighter and more secure future for all.
