Hope has finally arrived for the people of Ughere-Abraka in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, as a fully constructed and well-equipped health centre has been delivered to the community through the Delta CARES program, under the Community Driven Development Social Implementation Unit (CDDSIU).
The Delta State Government implemented the project with financial support from the World Bank and in alignment with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a policy framework focused on Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and enhanced peace and security.
Ughere-Abraka residents have travelled several kilometres to access healthcare services in Abraka town for decades. This has posed serious health risks, especially for pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and the elderly, who often face delays in receiving medical attention.
Speaking during the official handover of the Health Centre, the Technical Head of the CDDSIU, Mrs. Akohwoareho Orubu noted that the project was designed with input and active participation from the community.
“This project is a product of the Community Driven Development approach, which empowers communities to take charge of their development priorities. Ughere-Abraka identified healthcare as a critical need, and today we are proud to deliver this Health Centre with the support of the World Bank and under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori,” she stated.
“The newly completed facility boasts modern medical equipment, delivery beds, consultation rooms, and essential drugs to address the immediate health needs of the community. It is now set to provide primary healthcare services such as antenatal care, child immunization, treatment of minor ailments, and general health education.”
The Community Project Management Committee Chairman, Pastor Daniel Christopher, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the residents. “We have suffered for too long without basic healthcare. Now our people will not have to risk their lives on dangerous roads just to see a doctor. We thank the Delta State Government and D-CARES for this life-changing intervention.”
“It has not been easy for us,” said Mrs. Rose Ogaga, a pregnant mother of three. “Many times, women go into labour in the middle of the night, and the only option is to hire a motorcycle or trek to Abraka. Some don’t make it in time. This new Health Centre is truly a blessing.”
The project is expected to reduce the rate of preventable illnesses and maternal complications in the area while also promoting preventive healthcare practices through community sensitization programs.
As Governor Oborevwori continues to advance his MORE Agenda across the state, the Ughere- Abraka Health Centre stands as a shining example of inclusive governance and responsive development that prioritizes the welfare of rural dwellers. “This is a dream come true,” said Mrs. Clara Odinde, smiling with relief.
“Now, our children and mothers have a place to go when sick, and that means everything,” she said.
