The Delta State Government has reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance for crisis, declaring that peace and security must be maintained in all parts of the state.
This position was made known by the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, during a fact-finding visit to Oviri Olomu Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area and Egodor Community in Burutu Local Government Area, following a boundary dispute between the two communities.
Chief Uzor explained that the government’s primary concern is ensuring that all communities across Delta State enjoy peaceful coexistence, and that any sign of tension or conflict will be swiftly addressed without bias.
“The people of Egodor and Oviri Olomu communities petitioned the state government over alleged land encroachment. We listened to both parties and identified the need to carry out an on-the-ground assessment to establish the facts, build trust, and guide decision-making,” Chief Uzor stated.
He revealed that differing boundary claims were made, with Oviri Olomu representatives pointing to a bridge as the boundary, while the Egodor community insisted it was a T-junction called Owepele.
“We’ve seen key landmarks, listened to representatives from both sides, and gathered oral testimonies. We encourage all parties to submit any relevant documents to back their claims. These will be cross-referenced with existing records to enable the government to arrive at a just and informed resolution,” he added.
Chief Uzor appealed to community leaders and residents to maintain peace and avoid inflammatory statements, stressing the importance of calming youths and preventing any form of violence while government investigations are ongoing.
“Everyone should return to their communities and maintain peace. No one should incite conflict. You have lived together peacefully and can continue to do so. Any further documents or overlooked details should be submitted to us for consideration as we work towards a conclusive decision,” he said.
He emphasized the impartial stance of the government, stating: “We do not take sides. We are here to listen, and your statements may either support or contradict your position, so be truthful and respectful in your engagements.”
Community leaders from both Egodor and Oviri Olomu expressed appreciation to the Special Adviser and his team for their timely intervention.
They pledged to maintain calm and await the government’s resolution of the matter.
