Sapele – Sapele Local Government Chairman, Okakuro Bright Abeke will, on Thursday, June 12th, lead a significant “Democracy Walk” through the heart of Sapele, joined by council members, politicians, civil rights groups, and residents, to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day and express solidarity with national and state leadership.
Okakuro Abeke emphasised the dual purpose of the event, stating: “This walk is a solemn celebration of the hard-won democratic freedoms we enjoy today, symbolised by June 12th. Simultaneously, it is a powerful demonstration of our unwavering support for the developmental visions of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” The walk aims to foster unity and reaffirm commitment to democratic ideals.
A diverse cross-section of Sapele is expected to participate. “We are mobilising councillors, political stakeholders from various parties, dedicated civil servants, vibrant civil society organisations, market leaders, youth groups, and the general public,”Abeke confirmed. “This transcends partisan lines; it’s about Sapele and Nigeria standing together for democracy and progress under our current leaders.”
The significance of June 12th as Nigeria’s Democracy Day forms the bedrock of the event. A representative from a participating civil rights group highlighted this, noting: “Walking on June 12th is a profound act of remembrance. We honour the sacrifices of those who fought for this democracy and recommit ourselves to protecting and nurturing it for future generations, while backing our elected executives.”
The walk will follow a designated route through key areas of Sapele. A source at the council who craved anonymity outlined the plan: “Participants will assemble at the Sapele Township Stadium by 8:00 AM. The procession will then move through major roads, passing Amukpe Roundabout, and culminate at the Sapele Local Government Council Secretariat.” Adequate security and traffic management arrangements are promised.
Central to the walk’s message is explicit support for Governor Oborevwori and President Tinubu. “Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda is bringing tangible benefits to Delta, and President Tinubu is steering the nation through crucial reforms,” Abeke asserted. “This walk loudly declares Sapele’s endorsement of their leadership and our collective desire for peace, stability, and development across all levels.”
Beyond symbolism, the walk aims to energise the community. “We anticipate a large, peaceful, and enthusiastic turnout,” the source added. “It’s an opportunity for citizens to actively engage in commemorating our democracy, fostering community spirit, and showing appreciation for the democratic space that allows such expressions of solidarity.”
Concluding the pre-walk briefing, Abeke extended a final invitation: “I urge every son and daughter of Sapele, every resident who believes in democracy and progress, to join us on Thursday. Let us walk together in unity, celebrate our freedom, and show strong support for our Governor and President as they work for a better Delta and a greater Nigeria.” The event is poised to be a major display of civic engagement in the local government area.
