As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, the Delta State Commissioner for Lands, Surveys, and Urban Development, Chief Goodnews Obiodeh has hailed the nation’s democratic journey, describing it as a cornerstone for inclusive governance and sustainable development.
In a press statement released on Thursday in Asaba, Chief Obiodeh praised the resilience of Nigerians in upholding democracy through the years and reaffirmed the Delta State Government’s commitment to building a people-centered society through democratic ideals.
“Democracy has empowered us as a people — it has given citizens a voice, a platform for participation, and the ability to demand accountability,” the statement read. “In Delta State, under the focused leadership of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, we are witnessing democracy at work through impactful urban renewal projects, land reforms, and transparent governance.”
Chief Obiodeh, however, acknowledged the current socio-economic challenges confronting many Nigerians, expressing empathy with those grappling with the effects of inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of living.
“We are fully aware of the hardships being faced by our people. These are trying times, and the pains are real.
“But I want to assure Deltans and Nigerians at large that the government at all levels is working diligently to alleviate these burdens and lay a strong foundation for a better tomorrow,” he said.
He called on citizens not to lose hope, urging them to remain united and committed to the values of democracy, which he described as the most reliable path to long-term national prosperity.
“Though the road may be rough, our destination remains firm. The sacrifices of today will give birth to a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous Nigeria. Let us continue to uphold the principles of democracy, justice, equity, participation, and accountability.
“Democracy Day, celebrated on June 12 each year, commemorates the enduring struggles and sacrifices made by Nigerians in the pursuit of freedom, justice and democratic governance,” Obiodeh said.
