The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, has felicitated with prominent sons of Delta State who were among the distinguished Nigerians recently honoured by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations.
In a statement issued to newsmen, Senator Dafinone, on behalf of the people of Delta Central Senatorial District, commended the Federal Government for recognizing the invaluable contributions of these illustrious Deltans to Nigeria’s democracy, development, and unity.
He particularly applauded the conferment of posthumous honours on Chief Frank Kokori, Chief Alfred Rewane, and Dr. Alex Ibru, describing them as “towering figures in Nigeria’s democratic evolution whose legacies continue to illuminate the nation’s journey towards justice, equity, and freedom.”
Chief Frank Kokori was honoured with the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) for his fearless role as a labour leader and his uncompromising stand in the fight for democratic governance during the military era. The late Chief Alfred Rewane, bestowed with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) title, was praised as a valiant pro-democracy icon and a renowned industrialist whose personal sacrifice remains etched in Nigeria’s political history. Also receiving the CON was Dr. Alex Ibru, the distinguished founder of The Guardian newspaper, celebrated for his pioneering efforts in the media and unwavering support for democratic values.
Senator Dafinone also commended living Deltan honourees who received various categories of national recognition. Among them is Barr. Felix Morka, CFR, a respected legal practitioner and the current National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), described as “a voice of reason and advocate of national unity and progress.”
Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, the founder of Vanguard Newspapers and a media titan, was honoured with the CON award. Dafinone extolled Amuka-Pemu’s immense contributions to journalism and his role in strengthening public discourse in Nigeria over several decades.
Also recognized was Barr. Luke Aghanenu, awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for his early activism as a student union leader, his service to the legal profession, and his unrelenting passion for democratic governance.
“These awards are not just personal honours; they represent a collective badge of excellence for the people of Delta State,” Dafinone said. “They affirm the critical role Deltans have played and continue to play in the progress, unity, and democratic journey of our dear country.”
The senator extended heartfelt appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as “a profound gesture of appreciation for the virtues of patriotism, sacrifice, and selfless service.”
“By honouring these men—both living and departed—the President has sent a strong message that service to the nation will never go unnoticed,” he added.
While expressing hope that the legacies of the deceased honourees will endure, Dafinone called on the living recipients to continue to be shining examples of commitment to nation-building.
“May the memories of the fallen heroes continue to inspire us. And may those still with us find strength to further serve Nigeria with courage and conviction,” the statement concluded.
