The Chairman of Udu Local Government, Hon. Vincent Oyibode has held a security meeting with residents of Steel Town (DSC) to address the alarming rate of crime in the area.
The meeting, which was held on June 23rd at the Chief Sokoh Hall in the council secretariat, was prompted by the increasing incidents of robbery, phone snatching, and other forms of insecurity in the community.
Mr. Bruno Tano, head of the local security (Vigilante) in Steel Town DSC, attributed the insecurity to the presence of some indigenes of the township who are perpetrating the crimes.
Oyibode acknowledged that the existing security architecture had failed and promised to reform the system. He tasked the councillor representing Steel Town DSC, Hon. Oscar Okoro, to schedule a meeting with residents to form a better security architecture, with each quarter having its own vigilante group.
Mr Johnson Takene, one of the residents present, appealed to the council chairman for the installation of street lights to help in solving the insecurity in the area, as the criminals take advantage of the dark to perpetrate their crimes, a request which the chairman promised to work on.
The Udu Council Chairman warned parents to be mindful of their children’s activities, stating that anyone found wanting would be severely punished. He also promised to crack down on shop owners dealing in hard drugs.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Superintendent of Police, Friday Ekunoayo, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the vigilante group and the police force. He promised that, going forward, his men would be on patrol in the area to restore peace and secure lives and properties.
