The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has received 12 fresh applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of pending applications to 122.
This comes just days after the commission’s earlier announcement on June 23 that it had received 110 applications.
Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement issued on Thursday, reiterated that the review process remains transparent and fair to all applicants.
“On Monday last week, 23rd June 2025, the commission announced that it had received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties. We also assured Nigerians that we would be providing regular updates on the matter. The commission is processing these applications transparently and in fairness to all applicants,” he said.
He added, “As of yesterday, Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, the commission has received 12 more applications, bringing the total to 122.”
Olumekun said that the list of the new applicants—including the names of the associations, their acronyms, addresses, and interim chairmen and secretaries—had been uploaded to INEC’s website and other public platforms. He assured that the applications would be reviewed in accordance with the Electoral Act and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.
INEC also disclosed that it had noticed internal leadership changes within some of the associations, including one instance in which an interim secretary was replaced following defection to another association.
The commission urged all applicant associations to maintain consistency in their leadership and contact information throughout the registration process to avoid delays.
“To facilitate the consideration of these applications, the commission appeals to associations to maintain consistency of their proposed leadership and addresses so that they do not, by their own actions, cause delays to the timely consideration of their applications,” the statement added.
