The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has praised the Delta State Government’s efforts in managing HIV programmes, citing the state’s proactive approach and commitment to taking ownership of its health initiatives.
Dr. Jerry Gwamna, Deputy Director of Programmes at the US CDC, made this disclosure during a recent visit to the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme.
Dr. Gwamna expressed the CDC’s satisfaction with Delta State’s progress in HIV programme management, noting that the state has led the way in this area.
“We have truly been happy engaging Delta State, having joined plans in collaborating with lead collaborating partners, we’ve seen great progress,” he said.
The CDC official commended the state’s forward-thinking approach, which has enabled it to pick up responsibilities and make significant strides in healthcare delivery.
Dr. Gwamna hinted that the CDC looks forward to continuing its cordial relationship with Delta State, building on the progress made so far.
He also revealed that the initial plan to transition full responsibility to the state by 2030 might be accelerated due to the current administration in the US.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, in his remarks, projected that the Delta State Government would be among pioneering states in Nigeria to take ownership of health programmes sponsored by the Federal Government and other health partners.
He said the initiative is part of efforts by the Delta State Government to enhance healthcare delivery.
Dr. Onjaeme, while saying that the sponsored health programmes by the Federal Government and other Health Partners had helped the state in combating and preventing the spread of diseases, noted that the move was to further enhance the state’s healthcare system and ensure sustainability of the programmes.
The Commissioner emphasized that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is committed to improving the health and well-being of its citizens and would not leave the implementation of the programmes solely to partners.
He expressed gratitude to the CDC and Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme for their contributions to the state’s healthcare system, noting that the programmes implemented by the partners have had a positive impact on the lives of Deltans and would not be taken for granted.
While appreciating the contributions of the partners, the Health Commissioner expressed excitement about the prospect of working together with them to improve the health and well-being of citizens of the State.
