The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sapele Correspondents’ Chapel, has conferred its prestigious Grand Patron Award on Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, in recognition of his unwavering support for journalism, community development, and public service.
The award, presented during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Chapel, is one of the highest honours of the Union and is reserved for individuals who embody the ideals of accountability, humility, and service to humanity. According to the Union, Senator Dafinone’s outstanding contributions as a chartered accountant, philanthropist, and now lawmaker, distinguished him as a natural choice for the recognition.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Dafinone expressed gratitude to the NUJ for what he described as “a profound honour,” adding that the gesture would inspire him to redouble his efforts in serving Delta Central and Nigeria at large. He stressed that political distractions and media attacks would not deter him from his mission of delivering meaningful dividends of democracy.
The Senator outlined some of his legislative and constituency priorities, with particular emphasis on the reopening of the moribund Sapele Port, which he said remains a crucial driver of economic revival in the district. He also disclosed ongoing consultations toward establishing a higher institution of learning in Delta Central, a project he believes will expand opportunities for youths while boosting human capital development.
“Let my works speak for me,” Dafinone said, noting that he has directed his media team to ignore social media criticisms, which he described as unnecessary distractions. Instead, he urged the Urhobo nation to embrace unity, warning that internal divisions and the pull-him-down syndrome could frustrate the region’s progress.
While commending the NUJ Sapele Chapel for its balanced reportage and professionalism, the Senator assured the journalists of his readiness to collaborate with them in fostering peace, accountability, and development. He praised the media’s watchdog role, stressing that a vibrant press is indispensable to democracy.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of NUJ Sapele Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Nelson Agbajor, applauded Senator Dafinone’s leadership style, describing him as a compassionate public servant who goes beyond statutory responsibilities to address the needs of his constituents. He recalled the senator’s mediatory role during the recent Okuama crisis, noting that his intervention helped secure the release of victims caught in the conflict.
Agbajor further explained that the decision to honour the Senator was unanimous, as members of the Chapel had passed a vote of explicit confidence in his leadership. He urged him not to relent in his efforts, emphasizing that Delta Central still required sustained representation to overcome its socio-economic challenges.
The NUJ Chairman also used the occasion to charge journalists to remain steadfast in upholding the ethics of the profession, assuring that the union would continue to support leaders committed to genuine service and transparent governance.
