In a bid to restore optimal functionality and uphold the integrity of the Ministry of Health, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has called on staff members to demonstrate greater commitment to their duties and adhere to the Ministry’s standards.
During an expanded meeting with management and members of staff, Dr. Onojaeme expressed serious concerns over persistent issues of lateness and absenteeism, which he noted have significantly impacted the Ministry’s operational efficiency.
“The frequency of late arrivals and unexplained absences has become a major obstacle to our productivity.
“It is imperative that we address these issues promptly to restore optimal functionality and ensure the ministry meets its objectives,” he said.
Lamenting the noticeable decline in punctuality and attendance among some staff members despite repeated reminders and formal notifications, the Health Commissioner disclosed that stricter measures would be employed against erring staff.
“To achieve the goals set for the health sector and ensure the well-being of the public, it is imperative that every staff member upholds their responsibility by adhering to working hours and maintaining consistent attendance,” Dr. Onojaeme emphasized.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Philomena Okeowo also addressed concerns regarding unlawful disclosure of confidential information, expressing disappointment over recent instances where sensitive, non-public information was shared inappropriately.
“Confidentiality is paramount in our work. Disclosing sensitive information not only violates the trust placed in us but also compromises the integrity of our work. Any breach of this trust will be dealt with seriously,” she warned.
To address these issues, Dr. Okeowo announced that the Ministry would implement stricter monitoring of attendance and disciplinary actions for repeated instances of lateness or absenteeism.
She added that a review of policies related to confidentiality and communication of sensitive information would also be conducted.
“We are committed to creating a work environment that is efficient, ethical, and accountable,
“It is crucial that every staff member understands the importance of their role in upholding the values of this Ministry.” Dr. Okeowo said.
In a vote of thanks, the Director Medical Services and Training Dr, Chris Iwegbu assured the Commissioner of recommitment and dedication to work in ensuring quality healthcare services to the public.
