
Delta State Government has again expressed its commitment to the cause of statistics and statisticians in the state.
The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen made the remarks when he played host to the Delta State Statisticians in his office to commemorate World Statistics Day.
Mr. Ekedayen stated, “The governor is responsible for the approval of all your publications and even supports other social events and hostings. It takes only a governor who has trust and knowledge to give such support.
“For any government to act and act right you need to have those data to know how much to intervene.
“Most of the projects you see across the state today are actually Need Assessment-based.
The information, data garnered, packages and analysed, are processed by all of you gathered here today.
“Over time, you have proven to be outstanding with the testimonials of visitors from across the country, who we had course to interact with, especially during the just concluded Chartered Institute of Statisticians (CISON) conference.
According to the Economic Planning Commissioner, the Ministry of Economic Planning is the host of the statistics department, even as he commended them that they have been able to project themselves as one of the best in the country.
He urged the Statisticians to keep up the excellent work by being more committed to their duties, noting that, in the nearest future their dedication will speak for them.
Earlier, the Delta State Director of Statistics, Mrs Nkechi Maduemezia, stated that the pivotal role of Statisticians was in providing governments and organizations with quality data essential for effective decision-making, even as she said that without statistics, there is no future.
“As the world celebrates statisticians today, the message is clear: quality statistics are the backbone of progress, empowering communities and governments to build a brighter more equitable future,” Mrs Maduemezia reiterated.
She revealed that the United Nations Statistical Commission on October 10, 2010 established World Statistics Day, to underscore the critical role of accurate data in shaping policies and driving development across wards, communities, countries and the world.
