The Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Ejiro Jamani, has appealed to residents to support the state government’s efforts to uphold environmental sustainability by complying fully with the monthly sanitation exercise held every last Saturday of the month.
Speaking during an assessment tour of the exercise in Asaba, Jamani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling its social contract with Deltans, particularly in the area of environmental sustainability under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.
He expressed concern that despite the government’s consistent efforts, many residents continue to disregard the three-hour sanitation window between 7 am and 10 am. According to him, while some residents claim ignorance of the long-standing exercise, others simply neglect their immediate surroundings and only step out after the designated hours.
The Commissioner urged residents to take the exercise seriously, warning that the government may be compelled to adopt stricter measures if non-compliance persists.
In his words, “If we come out with the sledgehammer of the law, it will not be nice for them (violators) at all. We will continue to appeal, but if they persist, we will travel the other route. Maybe once we use one or two people to set an example, the needful will be done. Let us come together and put Delta at the forefront of cleanliness.”
Jamani also commended voluntary groups — including the League of Likeminds International Club and other environmental collaborators across Asaba, Warri and its environs — for their support toward the state’s sanitation efforts. He encouraged more groups to join the collective effort to make Delta State cleaner and healthier.
Also speaking, the President of the League of Likeminds International Club, Asaba, Dr. Christopher Daniels, noted that the exercise, being the last for the year, was crucial in ensuring that Asaba remains clean and welcoming ahead of the festive season.
While applauding the Ministry of Environment for its consistent commitment, Daniels expressed concern over the number of residents seen roaming during the mandatory sanitation hours instead of participating. He advised that public enlightenment be intensified to reinforce the importance of the exercise.
