Two yet-to-be-identified persons have been shot dead in a suspected cult attack in the Ajah area of Lagos State, PUNCH Metro has learnt.
A source, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity due to security reasons, said the incident occurred on Tuesday night.
According to him, the assailants stormed a crowded area close to the Ikota complex and started to shoot sporadically.
This, he said, threw the community into confusion as residents and business owners ran for safety.
“People were going about their businesses when we heard the sound of gunshots around Ikota complex. This caused everyone to run for safety.
“After the whole place became calm, two guys were seen lying lifeless at different spots.”
He added that the two male adults were seen with gunshot wounds after a closer look at them.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, in a post on Wednesday, stated that the attack was cult-related.
“Naija Confra reported a shooting near Ikota Shopping Complex, Ajah, Lagos. We can now confirm that the incident was cult-related, involving Aye and Eiye.
“The attack was carried out by Aye, and two people were reportedly targeted. At this time, we have not identified the victims and cannot say whether they were cultists or not,” the platform wrote.
While also sharing the incident on social media, an X user, Chibua Emmanuel, wrote, “It is true; two people were killed.”
Another X user, @Bigwhalenwa, stated that he took to his heels when he heard gunshots.
“I heard gunshots around there, people began to run, and I also joined them to run for safety.”
On his part, @Deluxekids_TM stated that he heard the sound of gunshots at the point of entering Lekki County Estate.
“I just bought food at Amala Oriki now, and when I entered Lekki County Estate gate, I started to hear the sound of gunshots.”
The Spokesperson for state police command, Abimbola Adebisi, could not be reached for reaction, as calls made to her telephone line were not responded to.
A text message sent to her had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.
Incidents involving deadly clashes by suspected cultists have continued unabated in the state, even as police intensify efforts to curb cult-related violence across the state.
PUNCH Metro reported that at least one person was killed following a violent clash between suspected members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities in the Awoyaya area of Lagos State.
