The Delta State Ministry of Science and Technology proudly staged its yearly Young Scientist Award, gathering outstanding schools from each of the 25 local government areas to honour exceptional talent and creativity in science.
The ceremony took place at the Delta State Innovation Hub in Asaba, showcasing selected students from both government and private secondary Schools, each proudly representing their local government.
In his address, the Commissioner for Science and Technology Dr. Daniel Odinigwe Odigie who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Rocky Ighoyota emphasized the need for motivating young minds in order to stretch their intellectual limits and aim higher.
According to the commissioner, the participants were chosen through outstanding examination results, and now stand as the state’s finest, with the champion scheduled to fly the Delta flag at the national Young Scientist Presidential Award in Abuja next month.
Winners of the competition include Michael Efayenafrom DSC Technical High School (1st place), Larry Oghenekaro of First Class Academy (2nd place), and Terara Obiorhoma from Marble Hill Secondary School, Okpanam (3rd place).
Highlighting the event’s deeper purpose, Odinigwestressed how fostering early innovation and scientific curiosity is essential for lasting progress, positioning the competition as a launchpad for tomorrow’s leading researchers and inventors who will help drive Delta State and Nigeria forward technologically.
He commended the state administration’s steadfast investment in such initiatives and confirmed ongoing plans to reward excellence generously while preparing even more ambitious editions in the future.
In her remarks, Director of Science and Technology Development, Mrs Nkechi Chukwurah reinforced that the programme forms a key part of the government’s strategy to actively involve and develop students in scientific endeavours.
“We established this platform to strengthen science and technology across Delta State. This is merely the foundation, several exciting initiatives are lined up for the rest of the year,” she declared.
In his appreciation speech, the first-place winner Michael Efayena of DSC Technical High School praised the state government for its continuous drive to raise awareness and support science education throughout Delta.
Among the schools that took part were Marble Hill School, Great Beginning Academy, DSC Technical High School, Government Model Secondary School, First Class Academy, and several others.
