The Delta State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called for the urgent passage of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), reaffirming its strong support for increased women’s representation in governance following the Nigeria Women Solidarity March held at the National Assembly on Monday, February 15, 2026.
In a communiqué issued by the Chapter, NAWOJ Delta aligned with the nationwide demand to address the persistent gender imbalance in political leadership and decision-making structures. The Association described the proposed legislation as a bold and necessary intervention to institutionalise inclusivity and ensure that women’s voices are adequately represented across all levels of governance.
The Chapter specifically urged federal lawmakers representing Delta State to demonstrate commitment to gender equity by voting in favour of the bill when it comes up for legislative consideration. According to the Association, supporting the Special Seats Bill would reflect responsiveness to the aspirations of women and progressive constituents who seek a more balanced and representative democracy.
NAWOJ Delta emphasised that inclusive governance carries significant benefits for sustainable development. The Chapter noted that greater participation of women in leadership will strengthen democratic institutions and enhance policy outcomes in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, social welfare, and community development.
The Association also called on civil society organisations, professional groups, traditional institutions, and community leaders to amplify advocacy efforts in support of the bill. It stressed that collective action remains vital in driving meaningful legislative reforms that promote equity and national progress.
Reaffirming its commitment, NAWOJ Delta State Chapter pledged continued advocacy for policies and initiatives that advance gender justice, inclusive governance, and the empowerment of women in leadership.
