The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has confirmed the death of four persons in a fatal lone accident that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night.
In a statement issued on Monday, the State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, said the tragic incident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and took place at about 9:18 p.m. in front of Christopher University.
According to him, “the FRSC Mowe Unit Command responded promptly to the distress call and arrived at the crash scene within two minutes.”
The commander disclosed that a total of 13 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 11 adult males and two adult females.
“Out of the 13 persons involved, eight sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four adult males unfortunately lost their lives in the crash,” Fasakin stated.
Preliminary investigations by the Corps revealed that the accident was caused by a tyre burst, compounded by excessive speed, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
“The suspected causes of the crash were tyre burst and speed violation. These factors remain major contributors to road traffic crashes and must be avoided by all motorists,” he added.
The injured victims were immediately evacuated to Famobis Hospital for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Idera Morgue.
Fasakin further disclosed that the Motor Traffic Division of the Redeemed Police Station has taken custody of the crashed vehicle and all recovered belongings for further investigation.
Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, the sector commander urged motorists to prioritise safety at all times.
“We sympathise with the families of the victims who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. We also urge all road users to obey speed limits and ensure that their tyres are in good condition before embarking on any journey,” he said.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads and called on members of the public to cooperate with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
