
Mesut Ozil, former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Germany midfielder has retired from football at the age of 34.
In a statement, Ozil described his football career as an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions.
He noted that injuries suffered in recent months propelled his decision to leave football.
Ozil began his career at Schalke and Werder Bremen before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2010, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
The mercurial midfielder then moved to Arsenal in September 2013, winning back-to-back FA Cups in his first two seasons, then winning it again in 2017.
The playmaker fell out of favour with new Arsenal boss Unai Emery and then moved to Fenerbahce in 2021 and later to Istanbul Basaksehir.
Ozil won nine trophies during his club career including four FA Cups and the Spanish La Liga title in 2012.
He also won 92 caps for Germany and was part of the team that lifted the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
