
The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu has stepped aside as the chairman of the party.
Mr Ayu’s action came days after a Federal High Court ordered his temporary exit from office pending the determination of the substantive suit which has been adjourned to April 17, 2023 for hearing.
The Deputy National Chairman, North, of the of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum has has assumed office as the Acting National Chairman of the Party.
This followed a resolution by the PDP National Working Committee which considered the Order of the Benue State High Court that ruled that Dr. Iyorchia Ayu should stop parading himself as the national chairman of the party.
When asked about the party members’ reactions to the suspension and how the party planned to move forward, Damagum said, “As a party, we are prone to reconciliation. We will review it, we will have an NWC (National Working Committee) meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) and in that meeting we will discuss it, and there will be possible review of whatever is happening.”
A statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba says the decision was taken at an emergency meeting which carefully considered the Court Order in line with the party’s constitution.
Meanwhile, the Enugu East Senator and former Governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani has asked Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP without delay.
Senator Nnamani in a statement, said that Dr. Ayu’s leadership had brought misfortune to the PDP.
Senator Nnamani is one of those recently suspended by the Iyorchia Ayu led national working committee of the PDP.
