Aung San Suu Kyi, former Myamar leader, has been cleared of five out of 19 charges that were brought against her by the military in that country.
The move is part of a seasonal amnesty and will result in a reduction of her 33-year jail sentence by six years.
The amnesty is to mark the full moon day of Waso, in which 7,749 inmates were set to be released Tuesday from prisons across the country. Waso, also known as Dhammasetkya Day, commemorates the first sermon Buddha ever delivered.
Similarly, former president Win Myint, who was also ousted alongside Ms. Suu Kyi, received a reduced jail sentence after two of his charges were pardoned.
This is the first time they have included both Aung San Suu Kyi and Win Myint in the seasonal pardon, according to Radio Free Asia.
The 78-year-old Nobel laureate, was transferred from prison to house arrest in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.
She has been under military detention since the coup that ousted her from power in February 2021.
