Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is sueing British band Placebo singer, Brian Molko over a defamatory comment describing her as ‘fascist, racist’.
In July, the singer had insulted the PM during a concert near Turin, calling her a “piece of shit”.
A comment which prompted cheers from the audience.
Accordding to local media, Prosecutors in Turin officially opened an investigation into Molko for “contempt of the institutions” following the outburst.
Ms Meloni’s lawyers have now taken legal action and filed a lawsuit for defamation,
Under Italy’s criminal code, anyone who publicly defames the republic, which includes the government, parliament, the courts and the army, faces punishment of a fine of between €1,000 to €5,000
Meloni is the leader of the Brothers of Italy party, which has neo-fascist roots, and is at the head of Italy’s most rightwing government.
She won last year’s election while running on anti-immigration policies, as well as plans to limit LGBTQ rights.
