President Bola Tinubu on Friday performed the ground-breaking of the 350MW first phase of NNPC Ltd 1350MW Gwagwalada Independent Power Project (GIPP)
The Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant when completed is expected to generate an average of 10.3 million MWh of electricity per year with an expected revenue of $800 million annually.
The project which is situated on 54.7 hectares of land in Gwagwalada, FCT, is one of the critical power generation projects along the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline corridor which is at 70% completion, consists of three power train blocks of 450MW each.
Each block will include two General Electric, GT13E2 gas turbine generators, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine electric generator, one direct air-cooling condenser, balance of plant equipment and a black start diesel generator.
The project is inline with President Tinubu’s campaign promise to increase power generation beyond the current 12,000MW, address power value chain challenges, and remove all distribution bottlenecks.
The GIPP project is led by NNPC Ltd. in a joint venture with China Machinery and Engineering Corporation (CMEC) for the EPC, and General Electric (GE) for the Long Term Service Agreement, designed to provide reliable electricity, strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector, and accelerate economic growth.
