The leaders of the coup in Niger Republic have closed the country’s airspace until further notice, citing the threat of military intervention from neighbouring countries.
According to Flight tracking website Flightradar24 there are currently no aircraft in Niger’s skies.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had earlier given the Niger juntas ultimatum to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum latest by Sunday August 6 and had earlier sent delegates which Niger rejected.
However, the Niger armed forces said they were ready to defend the country.
Mr Bazoum was detained on 26 July, and General Abdourahmane Tchiani, commander of the presidential guard, proclaimed himself the new leader.
Meanwhile, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has urged ECOWAS led by President Bola Tinubu not to use military force in response to the coup in Niger Republic.
In an interview Monday with a media outfit, President of the youth forum, Yerima Shettima expressed fear that Nigeria, especially the northern region would pay dearly if ECOWAS decided to use military force in Niger.
The forum called on the coup leaders to start implementing the transitional plan in order to return the nation to democratic rule within a year, saying that peaceful relations and stability should come first.
On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu met with governors from states sharing border with Niger Republic.
