Former Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s recent corruption charges have been suspended his spokesman on legal affairs, Naeem Panjutha has said on Tuesday.
The Islamabad High Court in Pakistan after an appeal against his conviction on the grounds that he was convicted without being given the right to defend himself suspended the case.
Naeem Panjutha is however uncertain if the conviction will lead to the former PM’s release.
Khan has been in prison since August 5 after being given a three-year term for illegally selling state gifts while serving as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022.
The 70-year-old was a cricket hero and now a politician with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Since Khan lost a vote of confidence at the parliament in April 2022, he had faced over a hundred other cases.
The government has alleged that his party was behind the violence that broke out last week and has allowed an antiterrorism court in Lahore to detain and interrogate him.
Khan has continuously rejected the allegation and claimed them to be a political scheme to prevent him from contesting in the general election due later this year.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Election Commission has barred Imran Khan from contesting election for the next five years.
