Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as ‘Sunday Igboho’, has been released by authorities in the Benin Republic.
Igboho who had been under house arrest for over 2 years was confirmed to be freed by the Yoruba Nation Leader, Prof Banji Akintoye, who noted that the activist was already on his way to Germany to be reunited with his family.
In July 2021, Igboho was arrested by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Republic of Benin on his way to Germany with his wife.
The Nigerian government had requested his extradition on charges of arms smuggling, inciting violence, and disturbing public peace, raiding his residence in Ibadan.
He was in custody until the Benin Republic court ruled that there was no evidence to support the charges and ordered his release.
Igboho’s lawyer who has confirmed that the activist has left the Benin Republic and is now in Germany, called on the government of Benin Republic to prevent his extradition to Nigeria on the grounds of security and threat to his life.
