Chadash Empowerment Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has called on government to implement strategies aimed at addressing the plights faced by orphans and vulnerable children in the country.
The Founder of the Foundation Mrs Temitope Adeola made the appeal in Abuja during an event organized by the foundation to mark this year’s World Orphans Day with the theme, ‘Care for the Uncared’.
According to Mrs Adeola the predicaments of the orphans were enormous and as such there was need for conceited efforts by government and other stakeholders to address their challenges.
“There are different ways we can support the orphans. These include adopting an orphanage home, partnering with NGOs, indirectly adopting a child by caring for needs through annual or monthly food donations, infrastructure support, and sharing expertise for their benefit,”
She stressed, “We all have the power to make a difference. We need to play our roles effectively especially in areas of policies, tax incentives for orphanage homes, special schemes for orphans, affordable medical care, and quality education. I know the government is not the only remedy, but effective steps need to be taken by relevant authorities.”
The Chairman Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Solomon Adeola representing Ogun West Senatorial district who is the spouse to the organizer and the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi said orphans and vulnerable children would be accorded the necessary assistance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda
Several orphanages within the Federal Capital Territory participated in the event, with the call to action to other Nigerians to emulate the Foundation.
The World Orphans Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness on the plight of orphans and explore ways to enhance their welfare such as education, health, and nutrition.
