Gunmen attacked the residence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lokoja, Kogi State, at approximately 3:30 am today, Friday, December 1st.
Security personnel engaged in a gun battle with the assailants for over 30 minutes until reinforcements arrived, according to the commission on X, formerly Twitter.Although no casualties were reported, INEC wrote that the incident resulted in property damage during the shootout.
A joint security team has since secured the premises, which took place a day following a mob’s encirclement of the state office.
A mob blocked all entrances to the State Headquarters in Lokoja, impeding staff from conducting regular operations and restricting access for legal representatives of political parties involved in recent off-cycle gubernatorial elections.
INEC urged a comprehensive investigation into the incident and emphasised the necessity for increased security measures to safeguard the safety of personnel and assets within Kogi State.
