
A non-governmental Organization, Twin Alive foundation has called on the United Nations and the Federal government of Nigeria to adopt December 2nd annually as a day to celebrate Mary Slessor for stopping the killings of twins in Nigeria.
The progenitor of the foundation, Mr Jude Idiongesit who is also a twin said the signing of the petition would go a long way to immortalize the wonderful deeds of Mary Slessor.
Mr. Idiongesit said the day holds a great significance, since it was the birthday of Mary Slessor who was born on December 2nd 1848.
On activities to mark the day, the progenitor Mr. Idiongesit said, the foundation will be giving back to the communities as it will be having an outreach that involves free medical eye checkup and glasses, to commemorate the humanitarian attributes of Marry Slessor.
Mary Slessor who was a Scottish missionary and a Scottish Presbyterian missionary to Nigerian, fought for women’s right and rescued children from infanticide, especially twins.
The Co-founder Twins alive Foundation Mrs. Best Harona said twins and multiple births have been a source of Fascination to the world, hence the need for adequate childcare in the country.
During a visit to Mary Slessor’s place of residence in Use Ikot Oku in Ibiono Ibom local government area of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Okon Uwah a residence in the community said, aside from stopping the killing of twins, Mary Slessor brought redemption for women and the establishment of schools in the community.
Some of the twins who participated in the event said they would continue to celebrate The Life and Times of Mary Slessor.
About 200 twins across the country participated in the week-long event to celebrate the Life and Times of Mary Slessor the Scottish missionary who stopped the killing of twins in Nigeria.
The theme of the event was “give Mary Slessor a day”.
