As part of efforts by the Delta State Government to encourage a culture of cleanliness amongst citizens, thereby eliminating the proliferation of avoidable diseases, the monthly environmental sanitation exercise embarked by the state government took place across the state on Saturday with reports of mixed compliance in different parts of the state.
Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Mr. Matthew Edema, who monitored the exercise in the state capital in the company of officials of the state ministry of environment, the Delta State Task Force on Environment, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, and the office of the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Beautification, said that the purpose of the exercise was to ensure that residents of the state adhered to environmental laws and kept their environment clean. This, he said, would help control the spread of diseases such as cholera and the like.
According to Edema, “No effort will be spared in our collective efforts to ensure a cleaner and disease-free Delta State.
At Effurun, in Uvwie Local Government Area, our correspondent, Faith Affe reports that compliance was high. The popular Effurun roundabout, PTI junction and major junctions within the city were barricaded by officials of the Uvwie local government council who were enforcing the restriction on vehicular and human movement for the period of the exercise.
Residents, particularly at the Aka Avenue area of Effurun, were seen cleaning their drainages.
In Udu and some communities in Okpe local government area, our correspondents paint a picture of poor compliance by residents with shops open for daily business at Osubi and Okuokoko while only a few people were seen participating in the exercise.
In Warri, residents of Apala, Giwa-Amu, Okere-Ugborikoko and Okere market area disregarded the exercise and went about their businesses without hindrance.
In the light of these reports, it is hoped that the relevant government agencies responsible for sanitation would develop more effective strategies to ensure that a proper waste management and sanitation system is put in place to entrench a culture of cleanliness and a disease-free environment
