In the last one decade, leadership deficit and bad governance have been identified as the bane of Nigeria’s development. Series of peaceful and violent nationwide protests had been staged by the youths with attendant awful consequences for the protesters and the entire country.
Worried about this trend, the Value Rebirth Centre LSD Leadership School, Delta Study Centre, in partnership with African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Konrad Adeneuer Stiftung, and Shamar Educational Foundation, recently gathered development stakeholders from all parts of Nigeria in Warri to discuss the nexus between Leadership, Family Management and Nation Building.
The discourse, which marked the annual leadership lecture of the school, attracted academics, amongst whom was Professor Enajte Ojaruega from Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, as guest speaker; as well as Prince Godwin Ejinyere, Director General of Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Devt Agency, WUEDA.
Speaking at the event, Prince Godwin Ejinyere called on all development stakeholders to collaborate with the Agency towards rebuilding the Oil City, in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The WUEDA DG, who was special guest at the event, was represented by his Senior Media and Communication Aide, Dr. Godwin Orhoadahwe.
He described the theme of the lecture, “Leadership, Family Management and Nation Building,” as very apt, as it centred on the major issues confronting Nigeria’s development today.
“Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, is very passionate about restoring the lost glory of Warri, Uvwie and their environs but we need all hands to be on deck for this to happen,” Ejinyere said.
Prince Ejinyere urged the leadership school to inculcate into its students the culture of maintaining their surroundings, so that they can be habitable and sustainable. He told the audience that the Environment Department of WUEDA would not relent in prosecuting offenders who dumped refuse with reckless abandon in its areas of operation.
Delivering her lecture, the guest speaker, Prof. Enajte Ojaruega from the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, enjoined all Nigerian parents to practice deliberate parenting as against being nonchalant about it, describing the family as the most important school for training children for the larger society.
She emphasized the pivotal role that family leadership plays in the overall leadership of a nation, and advised parents to do as they say, as good role models that their children could imitate to build the Nation.
The University don also urged parents to teach their children how to be self-reliant; to be accountable and responsible, using a reward system based on competence; and avoid celebrating wrong characters and values; engage in value re-orientation, leadership and nation building. She said no child should be bigger than their parents, in line with African culture and tradition.
Analyzing the lecture, a panel of discussants recommended that social media should be regulated in order to reduce the high level of internet corruption in Nigeria. They charged parents to monitor the sites which their children visit on the internet to forestall their being corrupted.
The panelists also stressed the need for active listening, that is, listening to what the children do not say, more than what they said. “Do not ever play politics with parenting. Intentional parenting is needed,” the panelists strongly advised parents.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of the Value Rebirth Centre, Effurun, Pastor Edewor Egedegbe blamed the leadership problem in Nigeria on a faulty political selection process which puts square pegs in round holes. He called for sustained advocacy and civic education to enlighten citizens on the need to hold public office holders accountable.
In their separate goodwill messages, other speakers, including the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Joseph Ambakederimo, urged Nigerians to know the right thing, do the right thing and support the right thing, as marks of good leadership. They charged parents to train their children in the right direction so that society could be peaceful in the future.
The event featured the 7th graduation and 8th matriculation ceremonies of the Value Rebirth-Centre LSD Leadership School; as well as presentation of certificates and awards to deserving persons, and the induction of graduates into the Centre’s alumni association.
