
Hon Bright Abeke, chairman of Sapele local government council, has inaugurated new revenue committees to boost finances for the council. The committees will oversee advertising, street naming fees, waterside development and the local abattoir.
The inauguration ceremony was held in the council chambers and was attended by senior officials,including Hon Raymond Overah, council secretary, and Hon Dora Iweto, vice chairman. Local councillorsfrom each ward were also present to witness the inauguration.
The new committees inaugurated were the Delta State Signage Advertising Agency, Revenue Committee on Street Naming, Revenue Committee for UgbekokoWaterside, Revenue Committee for Waterways and Revenue Committee for the Abattoir. Each committee will be responsible for generating revenue in their designated area.
In his inauguration speech, Chairman Abeke charged the committee members to work diligently to boost council finances. He said the committees were created to not only generate funds but also create local jobs through their activities.
Hon Overah who also spoke pledged the full support of the council secretariat to the new committees. He believes they can be very effective at improving administration and financial management if given the right support.
Residents have welcomed the move, hoping it will encourage development and investment. “We need new sources of funds to fix infrastructure and community services,” said Samuel Omofuma, leader of a local trade union.
However, some opposition councillors worry about a lack of oversight. Elder Edema Ojugo said “The committees must have transparency to avoid any improper conduct.
With hard work, the new revenue committees aim to increase funds for projects that will benefit Sapele residents and boost the local economy. Their success will be monitored closely.
