
The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has described Zenith Bank Headmasters’ Cup Football competition as the cradle of hunting for talents.
Oborevwori, who stated this in Asaba in his address at the grand finale of the 2024 Zenith Bank/Delta Headmasters’ Cup Football Competition said that the state government partnership with Zenith Bank had paid off.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, the governor said that the state was committed to sports development and appreciated Zenith Bank PLC for its unbroken partnership in sports development.
Governor Oborevwori stated that the Headmasters’ Cup and Principals’ Cup Football Competitions sponsored by the Zenith Bank was one of the best to have happened to the state.
He observed that the Zenith Bank PLC had done so much for the state apart from the fact that Delta was their home state, stressing that the Bank was sponsoring competitions at different levels across the country.
The governor, who said that Delta was a state that hostscompetition and wins and also wins even when not hosting, added that Zenith Bank’s initiative to catch them young was synonymous with the direction the state government was driving sports development.
While congratulating the winner of this year’s edition of the competition, Ighogbadu Primary School, Warri, the governor pledged to sustain the donation of a bus to every winner of the tournament.
Earlier, the Group Managing Director/CEO, Zenith Bank PLC, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, represented by the Branch Manager, Asaba, Dr. Ifeanyi Attama, stated that Zenith Bank Headmasters’ Cup Football Competition was a prestigious event designed to develop sports in the state.
The GMD said that the engagement of the children through the competition had brought valuable lessons to the pupils, particularly the benefits of commitment, hard work and team work.
She emphasized the need to further nurture the children for greater heights in sports and lauded the state government for its support.
In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu explained that the competition was organized by Zenith Bank in collaboration with Delta State Government to advance the policies and programmes of Oborevwori’s Administration in promoting the game of football among primary school children.
He said that a total of 756 schools participated in the preliminaries, recalling that the contests went through zonal and kick out stages.
Ashibogwu stated that Zenith Bank had helped in the state government’s efforts to promote interest in the game of soccer at the primary school level.
In the final match of the competition, IghogbaduPrimary School, Warri defeated Johanah’s Model School, Udu by 1-0 to emerge champions of the tournament, while Ani -Nshi Primary School, Ogwuashi-Uku, Aniocha South beat Ometan Primary School, Okpe on penalties.
