Delta State Police Command has concluded its investigation into the controversial death of Mr. Emeka Okediachi which occurred on November 14, 2024.
The autopsy revealed that Mr. Emeka’s death was caused by hypertensive heart disease complicated by uncontrolled hypertension. Toxicological analysis further uncovered high concentrations of multiple drugs, including tramadol, morphine, opium, diazepam, amitriptyline, and ethyl alcohol, which significantly worsened his condition.
Allegations that the police were responsible for his death prompted a thorough inquiry ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.
In a press release issued on January 7, 2025, through the public relations officer; SP. Bright Edafe, the Command announced that the autopsy was conducted in the presence of family members and two independent pathologists—one appointed by the deceased’s family—had exonerated the police.
The investigation, carried out to fulfill the promise made by CP Abaniwonda in a November 29, 2024, statement, demonstrated the Command’s commitment to transparency. The Commissioner assured the public that, had any officers been implicated, they would have been duly sanctioned.
The findings have shifted the focus from alleged police misconduct to the dangers of substance abuse, particularly among young people. CP Abaniwondaemphasized the need for increased awareness about the harmful effects of drug use, stating, “Abusing hard drugs is dangerous to the heart and could lead to untimely death.” He urged parents, guardians, and youths to take a stand against drug abuse to prevent similar tragedies.
This case underscores the critical role of public trust in law enforcement and the importance of addressing societal challenges such as drug abuse. The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to serving the community while calling for collective efforts to tackle the scourge of substance abuse.
The Command expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them of its continued support.
