Onya Community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State is witnessing a transformation that speaks volumes about Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to his MORE Agenda policy, particularly in enhancing healthcare accessibility.
The rehabilitation of the Onya Health Centre by the Community-Driven Development Social Implementation Unit (CDDSIU) under the Delta State Community Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) programme marks a significant milestone in addressing the long-standing healthcare challenges in the area.
For years, the Onya Health Centre, once a beacon of primary healthcare delivery, had suffered neglect, with dilapidated structures, a lack of essential medical supplies, and insufficient healthcare personnel.
This unfortunate situation forced residents to travel long distances to access medical care, often leading to preventable complications and fatalities, especially among pregnant women, children, and the elderly. Many community members had no choice but to rely on traditional medicine or endure ailments due to the lack of accessible healthcare services.
Recognizing the dire need for intervention, the CDDSIU, through the D-CARES programme, in alignment with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, embarked on a full-scale rehabilitation of the health facility under the D-CARES program.
The renovation included roof repairs, repainting, installation of new beds, provision of essential medical equipment, and recruiting additional healthcare personnel. The initiative also facilitated the provision of clean water and stable electricity, ensuring a conducive environment for healthcare delivery.
The impact of this project on the Onya Community has been profound. With the Health Centre now fully operational, residents no longer have to travel long distances for medical attention. Pregnant women can now access proper antenatal and postnatal care, while children receive routine immunizations without stress. Emergency cases are now attended to promptly, reducing the rate of preventable deaths in the community.
Expressing their gratitude, the Onya Community leaders and residents lauded Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to grassroots development. “This rehabilitation has brought a new dawn to our people. For years, we have suffered due to the poor state of our health centre, but today, we have renewed hope,” said Mr. Vincent Ossai, a community elder.
Mrs. Isioma Adoziaku, a beneficiary of the renewed healthcare facility, shared her experience: “When my child fell seriously ill, we had to travel miles to another town for treatment. But today, I can easily bring him here and receive quality care. This is a blessing to us.”
Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritises Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security, has once again demonstrated its impact through this project. The rehabilitation of the Onya Health Centre is a testament to his administration’s dedication to ensuring that no community is left behind in the quest for quality healthcare and improved living standards.
As the D-CARES programme continues its implementation across Delta State, communities like Onya can look forward to more infrastructural and social interventions aimed at improving the well-being of the people. Indeed, this rehabilitation is not just about fixing a building; it is about restoring hope, saving lives, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to the health and prosperity of its citizens.
