As part of efforts to implement the state-wide safety and community policing initiative in Delta State, the representatives of the Safety and Rescue/National Community Policing Campaign Team paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Adviser to the Governor of Delta State, Chief Ighoyota Amori,
The Group, led by the State Director, Dr. Godreignings Ojuneme stated that the initiative aims to tackle road accidents, promote public safety, and generate employment through community-driven efforts.
He said the proposed project includes the sensitization of the 25 Local Government Areas in the State on the importance of community policing, the installation and monitoring of speed limit devices in vehicles, and the deployment of traffic/security cameras to monitor vehicular movements across the State.
“We believe this partnership with the State government will go a long way in reducing the rate of road accidents caused by over-speeding,” the group leader said.
“Our plan also includes training citizens on how to operate the devices and manage the technology involved as this will create job opportunities while ensuring safer roads for all Deltans.
In his response, Chief Amori commended the Group for the laudable initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. However, he noted that the scope of the project requires institutional handling.
“This is indeed a thoughtful initiative,” Chief Amori stated. “But such a comprehensive project can only be effectively carried out by the Ministry of Transport, under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner.”
He advised the Group to present their proposal to the Commissioner for Transport, whom he said has the administrative mandate to facilitate such a project.
Chief Amori also emphasized the financial demands of the proposed plan, stressing that a clear and detailed presentation would be essential for further consideration.
“This project is complex due to the financial implications involved. It will require huge capital investment; the number of surveillance cameras, training of personnel, procurement of speed limit devices, and other components make it a robust initiative,” he explained. “It is important that a comprehensive proposal with full explanation and cost analysis be made available to the appropriate Ministry.”
The Chief Adviser reaffirmed his support for initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and urged the Group to continue engaging relevant stakeholders to bring their vision to fruition.
