The Delta State chapter of the Motorcycle Operator Union of Nigeria (MOUN) has officially inaugurated its Sapele branch in a colourful event marked by speeches of unity, welfare and dedication to the cause of grassroots transportation workers.
The inauguration, which took place in Sapele, was presided over by the Delta State executives of the union, led by the National Provost, Comrade Monday Iriyo. Also in attendance were other top officials of the union including the National Patron, Mr Oyeaki Oyeaki, and the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Mike Ahwatoga.
Comrade Philemon Mujakperuo was installed as the pioneer chairman of the Sapele branch. Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office, Comrade Mujakperuo assured union members that his administration would be guided by the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, and unwavering dedication to their welfare.
“I want to thank the state and national body for finding me worthy to lead the Sapele branch. I assure all members that I will carry every executive member along and ensure that the welfare of all motorcycle operators remains a top priority,” he said.
He added that the days of suffering for commercial motorcyclists were over. “Our people have suffered a lot. That suffering ends today. If any of our members has challenges fixing their motorcycle, they should come to me directly. I will assist them with soft loans immediately. No one will be left behind under my leadership,” Mujakperuo promised.
The Motorcycle Operator Union of Nigeria is a registered organisation affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and recognised by law. The union exists to protect the rights and interests of commercial motorcyclists across the country and offers a range of benefits to its members, including access to soft loans, health insurance, and other welfare packages.
Addressing attendees at the event, National Provost Comrade Monday Iriyo urged the new executives to operate strictly within the confines of the union’s constitution and ensure that all members are properly registered and documented.
“It is important that all motorcycle operators understand the laws guiding the union. Registration and documentation are not optional. They are necessary for your protection and benefits,” Iriyo said.
On his part, the National Patron, Oyeaki Oyeaki, charged the newly inaugurated executive to be impartial in their dealings and to avoid actions that may cause internal crises.
“You have been given a rare opportunity to serve. Always do the right thing and avoid anything that could lead to disunity or unrest among members,” he advised.
Also speaking, the union’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Mike Ahwatoga, encouraged the new leadership to be diligent, responsible, and responsive to the needs of members.
