The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday visited some hospitals and correctional centres across the state to celebrate his 65th birthday.
A statement released by Soludo’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, on Monday, said the governor chose to focus the day, not on grand ceremonies or personal indulgences, but on humanitarian outreach, highlighting his commitment to the welfare of the people of Anambra State.
Aburime said the governor visited a psychiatric facility in Nawfia, Onitsha Correctional Centre, St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha and Iyienu Hospital in Ogidi to showcase a blend of compassion and empathy, which he said has become the hallmark of his servant-leadership style.
He said, “The day began midday as Governor Soludo first visited the psychiatric hospital in the heart of Nawfia. Upon arrival, he was greeted by staff and patients alike, with many expressing their gratitude for his presence. Soludo took time to engage patients in heartfelt conversations, bringing smiles to their faces.
“He emphasised the importance of mental health awareness, stating, ‘Mental health’ is just as important as physical health. We must work together to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and ensure that those who need help receive it. The people, especially the youth, should be mindful of what they consume, for the sake of their mental health.
“During the visit, the governor announced the ongoing construction of a mental rehabilitation facility in Nibo. He also pledged support for the Nawfia facility. Next on his itinerary was the Correctional Centre, Onitsha, where he spoke to inmates about hope, redemption, and the importance of rehabilitation.
“Every one of us deserves a second chance. Our facilities should not only serve as centres of confinement but as places of transformation.”
Soludo emphasised the need for the inmates to take advantage of the vocational training programmes that empower inmates with skills for reintegration into society upon their release.
“We want our youth to find purpose and opportunity without having to turn to crime,” he stated, inspiring both inmates and staff with his vision of reform.
The governor rounded off the day with visits to two hospitals, each stop revealing the challenges faced by the healthcare sector. His first visit to St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, brought him face-to-face with patients and healthcare workers battling inadequate resources and overcrowding.
“Healthcare is a fundamental human right that should be provided by the government, and we must ensure that every citizen has access to quality care,” he asserted, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to enhancing health outcomes across Anambra.
At Iyienu Hospital, the governor cut birthday cake, courtesy of the students, while re-enforcing his enthusiasm and genuine concern for the welfare of the less fortunate injected hope into the hearts of many.
As the day concluded, Soludo reflected on the experiences, stating, “This is just the beginning. My 65th year will be driven by a renewed sense of purpose – to uplift the underserved, empower the vulnerable, and promote healing in every corner of Anambra.”
The governor was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Ernest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, Chief of Protocol and Deputy Chief of Staff, Chinedu Nwoye, among others.
