
Medical Doctors in Delta State have been encouraged to adhere to the ethics of the Medical Profession and the Public Service Rules in order to advance the delivery of qualitative health care services in the State.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, organized by the Nigerian Medical Association, Delta State Branch in Asaba, the Head of Service of Delta State, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininim Oseji expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Medical Association, Delta State Branch for the great honour of the highest Award in NMA Delta State Branch namely the Roll of Honour Award bestowed on her. To demonstrate her appreciation for the role of NMA in her career progression, she disclosed that an award of Delta State Physician of the Year for 2025 and 2026 had been instituted by her.
The HOS stated that the award was in recognition of Physicians who have displayed outstanding qualities of an ideal Medical Doctor. The award, according to her would come with a certificate and would attract a cash prize of N250, 000.00 yearly to be presented at the Annual General Meeting.
Quoting the Mission and Vision Statements of the Nigeria Medical Association, she reminded members to engage themselves in professional development, advocacy, knowledge management, and public education as such action will help foster effective and efficient health care delivery in the State.
The Conference which attracted a number of dignitaries had the theme “Improving Access to Affordable and Quality Healthcare through Innovative Contributory Health Insurance Scheme: The Success Story of DSCHC.”
Reflecting on the vision of Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta who is the Director- General and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission maintained that every resident of Delta State must have access to quality and affordable health care without financial difficulties..
He added that the Commission also ensures that the Health Scheme stands on equity, efficiency, and innovation and these pillars make it possible that people can have access to quality health care irrespective of their social status or background.
According to Dr. Akpoveta “the poor must be looked after by the rich.” He further encouraged others in Medical Profession to invest in the Scheme as contributions are based on ability to pay more, while accessing health care is based on needs.
He emphasized that their role as Medical Professionals is to uphold the highest quality health care delivery so that Deltans can access care that they need without financial difficulties.
Other Speakers were Dr. Israel Adaigho, Chairman NMA, and Dr. Akponana Mudiaga, Chairman Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Ovie Albert, Associate Professor University of Calgary as well as Mr. Johnson Idoghor, Assistant Director of Cooperatives, Delta State.
