The Delta State Government, on Monday, officially opened the 6th Edition of its Strategic Communication Workshop (DELCOM 2025), with a strong call for responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools in shaping narratives for effective communication and leadership.
Representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Mr Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, commended the Orientation and Communications Bureau for sustaining the training initiative. He described the theme — “Strategic Communication in the Digital Age: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools for Effective Leadership” — as timely, urging participants to embrace AI positively. “Nation building thrives on peace building; learn to tell your stories constructively and manage information responsibly,” he advised.
Delivering his welcome address, the Director-General of the Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, highlighted DELCOM’s legacy of training over 900 communicators since inception. He stressed the need to harness AI and digital tools while observing legal frameworks such as the Cybercrimes Act of 2024, libel, and defamation laws. “As communicators, we must verify our sources, ensure accuracy, and avoid misinformation,” he cautioned.
Dr. Oghenesivbe also commended Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to human capital development, noting that the sponsorship of all six editions of DELCOM reflects the administration’s dedication to capacity building and effective communication.
Goodwill messages from dignitaries, including Head of Service Dr. (Mrs.) Minimi Oseji, Chief Adviser to the Governor Chief Ighoyota Amori, Speaker DTHA, Emomotimi Guwor, ably represented by the Majority leader, Emeka Nwaobi and other senior officials, reinforced the importance of digital skills in governance. Dr. Oseji cited the success of digital training across 19 MDAs, while Amori expressed enthusiasm for learning more about AI applications.
