The Delta State Government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl-Child Development, commemorated the International Day of the Girl-Child with a clarion call for girls to discover their potential early in life and become problem solvers in society.
The programme which took place today at Government House Annex in Warri, brought together over 100 secondary school girls drawn from 12 different schools across Warri metropolis and its environs.
In her welcome remarks, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl-Child Development, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, highlighted the challenges faced by girls worldwide, including systemic marginalization and bleak futures.
She noted that the United Nations designated October 11th as the International Day of the Girl Child to celebrate their resilience/struggle and achievements.
The Commissioner emphasized that the theme, “The Girl I am The Change I Lead: Girls in the Frontlines of Crisis,”was timely, given the current development opportunities provided by the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration for Girl-Child in Delta State.
She encouraged girls to leverage these opportunities to drive positive change in their environments, rather than waiting until later in life.
“We want to see you now, today, with your beauty, strength, intelligence, and grit, do things differently,” she advised.
The Commissioner charged the girls to be bold, daring, and catalysts for redefining negative narratives in their society. While she called on governments at all levels to prioritize girl-child education.
Mrs. Enebi Avworo, a lecturer at the College of Education, Warri, encouraged the girls to believe in themselves and practice positive affirmations.
During the question-and-answer section, a student sought guidance on promoting positive mindsets among her peer group. The young girl was collectively advised by some counsellors at the event, to surround herself with positive influences
The event featured balloon games, a quiz competition, and prize-giving ceremony, which saw several girls take home wonderful prizes.
Present at the event were Mrs. J.U. Bebenimibo, representing the chairman of Uvwie local government area, among others.
